STEPHEN SWEETING: YORKSHIRE SEXUAL PREDATOR BRANDED AFTER REPEATED OFFENSES AND ONLINE ABUSE
A notorious and highly persistent sex offender from Yorkshire has been publicly branded a 'sexual predator' following a series of alarming violations of court orders and his continued attempts to contact vulnerable children through online platforms.The case, heard at Hull Crown Court, revealed that Stephen Sweeting, aged 72 and residing in Bubwith, north of Howden, has a long and troubling history of sexual misconduct stretching back over five decades.
Sweeting’s criminal record is extensive, with convictions dating back to 1968.
His past includes sexual assault, indecent exposure, and attempts to communicate sexually with minors, some of which involved making indecent images of children.
His criminal history comprises a total of 43 offences from 1960 to 2020, with 17 classified as sexual offences and 10 related to breaching court orders.
Despite this, Sweeting continued to find ways to evade detection, notably by using false names and aliases online.
Prosecutor Oliver Shipley emphasized that Sweeting is a 'heavily convicted sexual predator' with an established pattern of offending.
He pointed out that Sweeting was previously jailed for two years on June 17, 2020, for attempting to communicate sexually with a child and for breaching a two-year suspended sentence handed down in June 2019.
At that time, Sweeting was living in Old Goole.
His earlier convictions also include sexual assault in 1968 and 1971, sexual assault and indecent exposure in 1973, and gross indecency with a child in the same year.
His criminal activities also involved sexual assault of a girl in 1974 and 1977.
Authorities uncovered Sweeting’s latest misconduct on July 24 of the previous year, when police monitoring his online activities detected him engaging in conversations on platforms such as Snapchat.
He was using an alias that was not registered with the police, raising suspicion.
Subsequently, he was arrested on September 25 for breaching his notification requirements as a registered sex offender.
During a search of his residence, Sweeting admitted to using unregistered social media accounts and engaging in sexualized conversations with young children.
Police found intimate images of his private parts and discovered that he had received indecent images.
Further investigation revealed that Sweeting had been in contact with a 12-year-old girl, with whom he exchanged explicit images and engaged in sexual conversations.
This contact was traced back to Hampshire Police, who coordinated with Humberside authorities.
Sweeting admitted to deriving sexual gratification from these interactions, which posed a significant risk of serious harm to children, especially females.
Prosecutor Shipley highlighted that Sweeting's actions demonstrated a high likelihood of reoffending and a dangerous disregard for court orders designed to protect minors.
Defense attorney Ben Hammersley acknowledged Sweeting’s guilty plea and his candid admissions to police.
He noted that Sweeting expressed remorse and recognized the potential long-term impact of his actions on the victims.
Hammersley also pointed out that Sweeting’s internet access was now severely restricted, as he only possesses a basic 'brick phone' capable of making calls and sending texts.
The defendant’s health issues and long period of unemployment prior to retirement were also mentioned as context.
Judge Alexander Menary addressed Sweeting directly, emphasizing the severity of his repeated offenses and the long-standing nature of his criminal behavior.
Despite Sweeting’s denial of any sexual attraction to children, his extensive record suggested otherwise.
The judge described the breach as 'very serious,' noting the potential for significant harm.
In light of his history and recent violations, Sweeting was sentenced to three years in prison.
Additionally, he was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and mandated to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offenses.
The court’s decision underscores the grave concern over Sweeting’s continued risk to children and the importance of strict legal measures to safeguard the community from such persistent offenders.
