NEWPORT MAN IMRAN ANWAR'S CONVICTION FOR REPEATED RAPE UPHELD BY COURT OF APPEAL
A man named Imran Anwar, aged 39, from Church Crescent, Bassaleg, Newport, has been convicted of serious sexual offenses including four rapes, sexual assault, and three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The offences involved him battering and repeatedly raping a vulnerable woman, ignoring her protests and demanding sex.
At Newport Crown Court last February, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Anwar denied the allegations initially, claiming any sexual contact was consensual, but the court found his account unconvincing.
Today, his appeal was dismissed by three senior judges at London's Criminal Appeal Court, who upheld his conviction.
Mr.
Justice Jeremy Baker stated that Anwar insulted his victim with violent blows, kicked her in the stomach, hit her across the face, and repeatedly forced her into sex against her will.
During the trial, the woman said she 'just lay back and let him do it' after Anwar refused to accept 'no.' On appeal, Anwar's defense argued that evidence involving web chats with the victim should have been admitted, claiming it could undermine his defense and render his convictions unsafe.
However, the judges ruled that the material was not sufficiently relevant and upheld the original conviction, rejecting his appeal.
