CRIEFF MAN IAN MOODY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL MESSAGES TO WHAT HE BELIEVED WAS A SCHOOLGIRL
A resident of Crieff, Ian Moody, found himself at the center of a serious legal case after engaging in the sending of sexual messages via social media. Moody, who is 45 years old and lives on Earnmuir Road in Strathearn, believed he was communicating with a young girl aged between 13 and 15. Over a period of nine months, he maintained this online interaction, which culminated in a series of explicit messages that led to his arrest in Crieff.During a court hearing held on February 24, Moody admitted to deliberately sending these messages with the intent of achieving sexual gratification or causing humiliation, distress, or alarm to the recipient. The court was informed that Moody had no prior criminal convictions, which was noted by the judge. His legal representative explained that Moody’s original intention was to engage in sexual conversations with adults, and emphasized that his actions were not motivated by any sexual interest in the supposed victim, regardless of her age. Despite this, Moody acknowledged that his conduct was entirely unacceptable and inappropriate.
In sentencing, Sheriff Euan Duthie ordered that Moody be placed under supervision for a period of three years. He was also required to register as a sex offender and adhere to strict restrictions, including limitations on international travel, contact with children, and the use of internet-enabled devices. Additionally, Moody was mandated to participate in a specialized treatment program designed for sex offenders. The sheriff noted that although a custodial sentence could have been justified given the nature of the offence, he chose a community-based order because this was Moody’s first offence. The sheriff issued a stern warning that any breach of the conditions attached to this order could result in imprisonment. The court underscored the seriousness of the offence and highlighted the potential for more severe penalties if similar conduct occurs again in the future.
