IAN MACKIE SENT TO JAIL IN DERBY FOR SEXUAL ABUSE THAT HAPPENED OVER 46 YEARS AGO
In a landmark case that spanned decades, Ian Mackie, a man from Derby, has finally been held accountable for heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl during the mid-1960s. The victim, now in her 50s, endured a long and painful struggle with the trauma inflicted upon her as a child, which she described as having made her life "hell" and significantly impacted her ability to form trusting relationships with men.Her ordeal began when she was a young girl, between the ages of 13 and 15, during the years 1965 to 1967. Mackie, then a teenager himself, repeatedly assaulted her, and his actions left scars that would last a lifetime. The victim recounted that Mackie would threaten her, warning her never to disclose the abuse, insisting that if she told anyone, she would face even worse consequences. These threats and the abuse persisted for approximately four years, until she was 15 years old.
It was only recently that she found the courage to come forward. After confiding in her son about her childhood experiences, she reported Mackie to the police last year. Her decision to speak out was driven by a desire to inspire other victims of sexual abuse to seek justice and to break the silence that often surrounds such crimes. She expressed her hope that others who have endured similar experiences, regardless of their age, would find the strength to come forward, emphasizing that keeping such secrets only prolongs suffering.
In court, prosecutor Jeremy Janes highlighted the significance of this case, describing it as the oldest sexual abuse case he had encountered in his career. He detailed that Mackie’s offending began when he was approximately 13 or 14 years old and continued into his late teens. The primary victim, who chose to remain anonymous, described the abuse as occurring on multiple occasions, with Mackie admitting to the repeated nature of his offenses. The court heard that Mackie also sexually abused two other girls during this period, with one victim recounting that the trauma had severely affected her ability to maintain normal relationships with men and that she had never forgotten what Mackie did to her.
Mackie, now 59, pleaded guilty to charges of gross indecency with a child and four counts of indecent assault on a child. His defense attorney, Keith Raynor, argued that the offenses took place when Mackie was a juvenile and emphasized that he had not committed any sexual offenses since then. Raynor also highlighted Mackie’s good character, noting that he has been a dedicated father and husband. However, the court was informed that Mackie’s health was in decline, as he suffers from osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection, and he walks with the aid of a stick.
Judge Michael Fowler sentenced Mackie to five years in prison, stating that no punishment could truly compensate for the damage caused. The judge emphasized that each girl’s life had been irreparably harmed by Mackie’s actions. As part of his sentence, Mackie was ordered to register as a sex offender and is permanently barred from working with children.
Following the sentencing, a police spokeswoman reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement to investigate allegations of sexual abuse regardless of how much time has passed. She underscored that this case demonstrated that even decades-old offenses could lead to successful prosecution, offering hope to other victims who might still be contemplating coming forward.
