HARRY BOOTH FROM SOUTH WEST LONDON CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY AND AFFRAY IN BRIGHTON

Harry Booth, a resident of South West London, was brought before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on November 8, 2023, where he faced serious charges related to animal cruelty and public disorder. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about an incident that took place in Brighton on May 17, 2022, involving Booth and his pet dog.

According to court records, Booth was involved in a violent episode that resulted in him kicking his own dog, a Rottweiler, multiple times in the head. The incident occurred during a period when Booth was reportedly experiencing a psychotic episode, which the court described as a state of extreme unwellness. The attack happened after a confrontation in the early hours at a Budgens supermarket located on Queens Road, central Brighton.

Prosecutor Benjamin Parkinson explained that Booth’s dog had lunged at a customer inside the store around 1 a.m., prompting a heated verbal exchange between Booth and the customer. During the altercation, Booth removed the dog’s muzzle, made threats towards the customer, and even threw a bottle. The situation escalated outside the shop, where CCTV footage captured Booth’s aggressive behavior, including him kicking the dog multiple times. Witnesses reported that Booth’s actions appeared to be part of a psychotic episode, and police officers who responded to the scene noted Booth’s erratic behavior.

When police arrived, Booth provided a false name and date of birth. Body-worn camera footage also captured him uttering profanities, including “F*** the law.” The incident of affray was not limited to the altercation at the supermarket; on the same day, Booth was involved in another confrontation with train staff, during which he used his dog as a weapon. This added to the severity of the charges against him.

During the court hearing, Booth’s defense attorney, Alison Reedy, highlighted his ongoing struggles with mental health issues. She explained that Booth had been suffering from mental health episodes since his teenage years, including multiple hospitalizations and being sectioned under mental health laws. Recently, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and is currently undergoing treatment. Reedy emphasized that Booth was in a significantly improved mental state at the time of sentencing.

She also expressed that Booth’s primary concern was for his dog, whom he described as a beloved pet. Reedy stated, “He’s clearly very fond of his dog and wants the best for him. He’s a lovely dog. He would never harm that dog intentionally – he’s horrified that he has done. He’s someone who forms a very strong bond with animals. He was able to give the dog a good life. They loved each other.”

In sentencing, Booth received a six-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, he was disqualified from keeping any pets for two years, a restriction that will expire in November 2025. The Rottweiler involved in the incident was confiscated from him by authorities. This case underscores the importance of mental health support and animal welfare, highlighting the tragic consequences that can arise when mental health issues are not adequately managed.
