FAMILY RAISE 'SERIOUS CONCERNS' OVER DAY RELEASE OF MAN WHO THEN KILLED MOTHER
Gilbert Corette has been convicted of murdering his mother, Marie Corette, who was 81 years old.The incident took place shortly after he was discharged from Lewisham Hospital’s Ladywell Unit on July 8th of the previous year.
Gilbert, suffering from autism spectrum disorder and a major depressive disorder with psychotic features, wielded a champagne bottle in the attack, leading to her death.
He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order under the Mental Health Act after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.
Judge Charles Wide QC described the case as a 'terribly sad and tragic' event, noting that Gilbert was obviously mentally unwell at the time and that his family likely experienced significant distress and anxiety.
The family publicly expressed some relief that Gilbert would now receive comprehensive care and treatment but also raised concerns about his release while still unwell.
They are awaiting an investigation by the NHS into the circumstances of his discharge.
Prior to the attack, Gilbert had exhibited signs of mental health issues, such as unusual behaviors like neglecting to open letters and discarding a valuable vinyl record collection.
His mother had previously installed padlocks on certain rooms within their home out of fear regarding his behavior.
On the day of the tragedy, neighbors reported hearing Gilbert loudly knocking on the door, displaying agitation and anger.
Despite being advised to stay away, he forced his way into the house and assaulted his mother and sister.
Emergency services arrived to find Mrs.
Corette lying in a pool of blood; she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
Gilbert also admitted to causing serious bodily harm to his sister.
There is ongoing scrutiny of the hospital and authorities involved in his care, with questions about how he was released despite showing clear signs of mental illness.
