GERAINT COSLETT FROM LLANELLI SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN SWANSEA
In August 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Geraint Coslett, a resident of Llanelli, who was found guilty of heinous crimes against a young boy.The allegations revealed that Coslett, during an incident, took explicit photographs of himself abusing a five-year-old boy, an act that has left a lasting scar on the victim and his family.
Details of the case were brought to light after the young victim confided in his grandmother about the abuse.
The boy disclosed that Coslett had sexually assaulted him on two separate occasions and had coerced him into engaging in sexual activities.
The grandmother, deeply distressed by her grandson’s revelations, immediately contacted the police to report the incident.
Following the police investigation, authorities conducted a search of Coslett’s mobile phone.
The examination uncovered not only the explicit images of the abuse but also a series of deleted indecent images of children that Coslett had downloaded from the internet.
The evidence painted a disturbing picture of premeditated and ongoing sexual misconduct.
During the court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, a psychiatric report was presented which concluded that Coslett suffers from persistent thoughts about pre-pubescent children, a finding that aligns with a diagnosis of paedophilia.
The prosecutor, Robin Rouch, detailed that the victim was only five years old at the time of the abuse.
The court heard that Coslett had sexually assaulted the boy twice and had manipulated him into participating in sexual acts.
The impact of the abuse on the young boy was vividly described in an impact statement read aloud in court.
The boy’s mother expressed her anguish, stating that her son now exhibits signs of anxiety and nervousness around unfamiliar people.
She explained that he refuses to sleep alone, shows reluctance to play, and sometimes becomes angry.
She lamented, “It feels like his childhood is being taken away from him,” highlighting the profound and lasting damage caused by Coslett’s actions.
Coslett, aged 36 and residing on Mansel Street in Llanelli, admitted to two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
Notably, he had no prior convictions before this case.
Judge Geraint Walters addressed Coslett directly, emphasizing the lifelong consequences of his crimes.
He stated, “It is no exaggeration to say that behaviour of this sort effectively deprives a child of that which is the right of every child – to be brought up feeling safe.
You took that away from him.” The judge also referenced the psychiatric report, which confirmed Coslett’s persistent thoughts about pre-pubescent children, a clear indication of paedophilia.
In light of his guilty pleas, Coslett received a sentence of six years in prison, with a 25% reduction for cooperation.
He is expected to serve up to half of that term before being eligible for release on licence.
Additionally, he will be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
To mitigate further risks, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed, restricting his access to children.
The judge underscored the importance of this measure, stating it was necessary “to reduce the obvious risk there is that, even with treatment, you may commit further offences.”
