CARE HOME CARERS JAILED FOR ABUSING LEARNING DISABLED RESIDENTS IN SUTTON
Three men responsible for caregiving at Grove House in Sutton have been sentenced to prison after being convicted of abusing residents with learning disabilities. The offenders Georgios Skordoulis, aged 28, Ahmed Hassanen, aged 54, and Alex Nazareth, aged 30 engaged in both physical and verbal mistreatment of those in their care.
A report from a staff member at the facility detailed daily physical assaults on one resident, Benjamin Daniels, who has significant learning disabilities and limited speech.
During the trial, it was disclosed that Skordoulis lifted Benjamin by his waist and swung him around a room, whereas Nazareth was seen wrapping a tea towel around his knuckles and punching him in the jaw.
The judge condemned their actions as 'cruel', highlighting that such behavior represented a profound breach of trust, involving gratuitous humiliation of vulnerable individuals unable to defend themselves.
Victims exhibited physical injuries like bruises, and their families noted emotional trauma.
The abuse surfaced after a staff member reported it to the police.
Investigations also revealed deficiencies in staffing levels and staff training at the care home, factors that contributed to the neglect and abuse.
In response, the facility was sold to a new owner who claimed improvements had been implemented.
Although Grove House had been rated as 'good' during an inspection in 2023, the court described the abuse as wholly unacceptable.
