BURNLEY MAN LEFT PARTNER NEEDING 10 STITCHES IN ATTACK
A man caused his partner to need 10 stitches beneath her eye during the first of two assaults he committed against her within a month.George Wray, aged 24, admitted to two charges of assault resulting in actual bodily harm in front of Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on June 28.
The judge sentenced Wray to prison, stating that he had subjected his victim to degradation and humiliation through these violent attacks.
During the hearing at Preston Crown Court, details emerged of how Wray assaulted his partner twice in June, resulting in injuries including a cut under her eye and bruises on her limbs.
Prosecutor Ben Stanley explained that on June 8 at roughly 6am, Wray asked for money to buy an e-cigarette, but when his partner said she had none, an argument ensued.
Wray then grabbed her by the hair and repeatedly punched her in the head.
A punch to her left eye caused the skin underneath to break open.
She initially went to Burnley Hospital, which was unable to treat her, and later visited Royal Blackburn Hospital, where she received 10 stitches to her eye.
The incident was not reported to police at the time.
On June 24, at around 5am, after a night out in a Burnley nightclub, Wray allegedly insulted her, calling her a 'slag,' and she called her brother for help.
The brother threatened Wray if he harmed her again, and as they returned from court, Wray attacked her in a car park.
He cornered her against a car and punched her multiple times.
A bystander called the police, and Wray fled the scene.
The victim sustained grazes on her left arm and injuries to her face, arms, legs, and a patch of hair loss on her head.
Wray was detained on June 26 and remained silent during police interviews.
He has a criminal record with eight convictions for 13 crimes, including assault and battery.
During mitigation, lawyer Richard English described Wray as a disgrace, acknowledging his poor behaviour and expressing hope for rehabilitation, suggesting a suspended sentence might benefit him.
Judge Daniel Lister condemned the actions as prolonged and disgraceful, noting the public setting and the degrading nature of the assaults.
He sentenced Wray, of Athol Street, Burnley, to two years in prison and ordered supervision after release.
