GATESHEAD PENSIONER JAILED FOR TERRIFYING ATTACK ON WIFE
A pensioner named George Taylor, aged 68, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after subjecting his wife of 40 years to a prolonged and terrifying attack at their family home in Gateshead.Taylor, who had recently retired from his role as a carer and had no prior history of violence, suddenly snapped following a doctor's appointment on March 21, where he refused mental health support.
Over approximately three hours, he repeatedly uttered threatening statements to his disabled 61-year-old wife, including 'I want you dead.' During the ordeal, Taylor held a sofa cushion over her face to suffocate her, then pushed her to the ground, sat across her stomach, and squeezed her neck.
He barricaded himself and his wife in the kitchen, placing paracetamol tablets on the table, and attempted to force one into her mouth.
He additionally held a knife to her neck and threatened to slit her throat, declaring, 'I will watch you die first then I will die.
I want you dead first.' The victim managed to escape the residence in the late afternoon and described Taylor as looking 'evil,' mentioning she had never seen him like that before, which left her terrified.
She later said in her impact statement that she now has nightmares to the point of being physically sick.
Taylor admitted to charges including intentional strangulation, suffocation, making threats to kill, assault, and making threats with a bladed article.
Miss Recorder Anderson sentenced him to two years and four months behind bars, noting that he subjected his wife to a 'prolonged and terrifying ordeal,' and that the incident was 'so out of character for him.' Defence solicitor Sue Hirst claimed Taylor had no prior trouble, is a 'quiet family man,' and described his actions as bizarre.
She added that he was overwhelmed by health and personal issues on that day and had sought help but did not see mental health support as necessary at the time.
The court acknowledged the seriousness of the offense and the impact on the victim.
