GEORGE SYME FROM WISHAW CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING POLICE RAID
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wishaw, retired teacher George Syme has been exposed as a depraved individual after admitting to the possession and distribution of thousands of indecent images of children. The allegations against Syme, aged 68, came to light following a police investigation that uncovered the extent of his disturbing activities at his residence on East Hamilton Street.According to court records, Syme pleaded guilty to charges related to the possession and creation of these heinous images, which were found on devices stored within his home. The timeframe of his illicit activities spans from March 2013 to August of the previous year, during which he amassed a collection exceeding 10,000 images depicting minors aged between just two and 15 years old.
The investigation was initiated after authorities received information on August 1 last year indicating that indecent images of children had been downloaded from Syme’s IP address. Acting swiftly, police obtained a warrant to search his property, and on the morning of August 10, officers arrived at his residence. Syme was present when police knocked on his door, and he cooperated minimally during the subsequent search.
During the extensive search, law enforcement officials recovered multiple electronic devices, including hard drives and USB sticks, which were believed to contain illicit material. A preliminary examination of one of the hard drives confirmed the presence of indecent images. Police officers informed Syme that he was under arrest, but he offered no response to their statements. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to Motherwell Police Office.
Syme was cautioned and formally charged just before 2 pm on the day of his arrest. The following day, he appeared before the court on petition. Prosecutor Imran Bashir detailed the severity of the material found on Syme’s devices, revealing that out of the 10,098 images recovered, 3,098 were classified as Category A, which is considered the most grotesque and disturbing. An additional 3,400 images fell into Category B, with 1,600 categorized as Category C, indicating a range of severity in the content.
During the court proceedings, Syme’s solicitor requested bail, arguing that his client needed time to organize his personal affairs. The solicitor emphasized that Syme had no prior criminal record and had adhered to bail conditions previously. He acknowledged that custody was likely, but requested that bail be continued to allow Syme to prepare for the potential consequences.
Sheriff Daniel Kelly QC deferred sentencing until July 12, pending the preparation of criminal justice and social work reports. It was also confirmed that Syme would be placed on the sex offenders register. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Syme was granted bail, leaving the court to determine his future legal outcome amidst the ongoing investigation.
