GEORGE EMERSON ARRESTED IN ARBROATH FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN SCOTLAND

In September 2003, a serious case involving child exploitation and possession of illegal pornography led to the conviction and imprisonment of George Emerson, a 50-year-old resident of Arbroath. Emerson, a former electrical engineer, was found guilty of downloading explicit material involving minors and taking illicit photographs of young girls within the town.

The case came to light as part of a broader international crackdown on child pornography, spearheaded by the FBI's Operation Ore. This extensive operation has resulted in over 1,000 arrests across the United Kingdom, including the arrest of Emerson in Arbroath. Scottish police, working in cooperation with international agencies, uncovered a disturbing collection of images during their investigation.

Specifically, Tayside Police recovered a staggering total of 2,160 images depicting young children being sexually abused. These images were described in court as 'horrific,' with some showing children as young as three or four years old. Emerson had not only viewed these images but had also taken further steps to possess and display them. Court records revealed that he had printed dozens of the most disturbing pictures, laminated them, and stored them in his loft in his home situated on Arbroath's High Street. Emerson lived there with his wife and three step-daughters.

Following his initial arrest on charges related to child pornography, Emerson was granted bail. However, he later breached the conditions of his bail when a shop assistant observed him taking photographs of girls under the age of 16. This breach led to further charges, and Emerson was subsequently convicted of taking photographs of the girls without their knowledge or consent, as well as viewing such images on his television set.

During the court proceedings, Emerson's legal representative, Nick Markowski, explained that his client initially accessed the internet to view hardcore and transsexual pornography but was eventually drawn to illegal sites containing images of children. Markowski emphasized that Emerson required specialized psychological help to address his offending behavior and prevent future crimes.

In sentencing, Sheriff Norrie Stein described the images as being of 'shocking gravity,' highlighting the severity of the case. Emerson was sentenced to four months in jail. Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of seven years, and all of his computer equipment was seized by authorities to prevent further illegal activity.
