HARLOW MAN GEOFFREY RANCE SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEX OFFENCES IN ESSEX
In a significant case brought to justice, Geoffrey Rance, a 61-year-old resident of School Lane in Harlow, has been sentenced to a six-year prison term after being found guilty of committing serious sexual offences that occurred in the past.The conviction follows a thorough investigation conducted by Essex Police’s specialized Quest team, which is tasked with examining cases of sexual abuse that are not recent but still warrant legal action.
Rance’s criminal conduct came to light after a courageous victim came forward in 2020 to disclose the abuse she endured at his hands.
She revealed that the abuse had taken place over a period of three years, beginning in 2000 when she was only 11 years old.
Her bravery in reporting the incidents prompted an investigation by the Quest team, which specializes in handling historical sexual abuse cases where the offences are over a year old.
Following her disclosure, Rance voluntarily attended Harlow Police Station in July 2020 for an interview.
During this session, he cooperated with authorities, but the investigation continued.
In October 2021, he was formally charged with two counts of gross indecency with a girl under 14 and one count of indecent assault on a girl under 14.
These charges reflected the severity of the allegations and the nature of the offences committed against the young victim.
Rance’s trial took place at Chelmsford Crown Court, where he maintained his innocence and denied all allegations.
Despite his denials, the court found him guilty on 25 November 2022.
As part of his sentencing, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of such offences, to monitor and prevent further harm.
Most recently, on 20 December, Rance appeared before the court once again, where he was formally sentenced to six years in prison.
Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a measure designed to restrict his activities and reduce the risk of reoffending.
This case underscores the importance of perseverance by victims and the dedication of law enforcement agencies in bringing offenders to justice, even years after the crimes occurred.
