PSYCHOTIC MAN WHO STABBED FATHER TO DEATH WAS CONSIDERED HARMLESS 'GENTLE GIANT', SAYS REPORT

A mental health patient named Gary Ward, aged 41, was involved in a tragic incident in Ayr in 2007 where he murdered his father, Jim, aged 62.

Cases over an 11-year period revealed that Ward was under the care of health and social services, who had regular contact with him.

Despite this, the report criticized the care team for failing to recognize the full extent of his psychosis, risky behaviors, and the influence of his alcohol misuse.

The report, which refers to him only as Mr F, states that Ward had a complex relationship with his father, whom he described as a 'cruel man' with verbal and physical abuse since his childhood.

It was noted that he had paranoid beliefs that he was being poisoned, which was not adequately addressed with medication.

The decision to give him 'confrontation skills' to face his father was described as 'naive.'He was diagnosed with psychosis and alcohol problems, but was found to be legally insane at the time of the killing and was subsequently ordered to be detained indefinitely at the State Hospital Carstairs.

The report highlighted that those involved in his care failed to account for the impact of his home environment on his condition, and many regarded him as a 'gentle giant' incapable of harm, which influenced their judgment of his risky behaviors. In conclusion, Linda Graham, leading the investigation, urged health and social care providers, as well as the Scottish Government, to review the report's recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
