GARRY CRANE SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ABUSE IN MARCH
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of March, Garry Crane, aged 34, was handed a substantial prison sentence of 15 years after being found guilty of multiple counts of sexual abuse involving three young sisters. The crimes, which spanned several years, included acts of sexual assault and rape, with one of the victims being subjected to rape. The sentencing took place at Cambridge Crown Court, where the court heard detailed accounts of the abuse and the impact it has had on the victims and their family.Following the verdict, the mother of the victims expressed her disappointment, revealing her hope that Crane would receive a harsher penalty. She stated, “I wanted him to have longer. It has been really hard for them. He took their childhood away from them.” Her words underscored the profound trauma inflicted upon her daughters and the ongoing pain they endure.
Judge Sean Enright delivered the sentence after reviewing the evidence and the guilty verdicts on nine charges. In his remarks, the judge condemned Crane’s actions, emphasizing the betrayal of trust involved. “You have preyed on these girls. What you did involved an abuse of trust because you got yourself into positions where you could be alone with these children and the offences took place over a number of years,” he stated.
During the hearing, prosecutor Sally Hobson highlighted the devastating effects of Crane’s actions, referencing a victim statement from the mother. She explained, “It describes what this has done not only to her daughters but also to herself. It isn’t just the victims themselves that suffer, but it has a much wider impact on those that are their parents and guardians.”
Crane’s defense attorney, Duncan O’Donnell, attempted to mitigate the severity of the crimes, arguing that the offences were impulsive and not premeditated. “The offences took place over a significant period of time but they are individually impulsive — there’s no planning here. This man has taken advantage of the situation, of which he finds himself. He has not deliberately sought out children to abuse them,” he said.
Throughout the proceedings, Crane sat impassively, dressed in a grey top and blue jeans, as the judge announced the sentences. The court’s ruling included a combination of concurrent and consecutive sentences, reflecting the gravity and multiplicity of the offences. The breakdown is as follows:
- Sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl: five years imprisonment.
- Assault of a seven-year-old girl by penetration: seven years, to run concurrently.
- Assault of a child aged seven to eight by penetration: seven years, concurrent.
- Attempted rape of a child aged seven to eight: eight years, concurrent.
- Assault of a child aged eight to ten by penetration: seven years, concurrent.
- Sexual assault of a child aged eight to ten: five years, concurrent.
- Sexual assault of an 11-year-old: five years, concurrent.
- Sexual assault of an eight-year-old: five years, concurrent.
- Rape of an 11-year-old girl: seven years, to run consecutively.
This case has left a lasting scar on the community of March, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding children from such heinous acts. The court’s decision aims to serve justice and provide some measure of closure for the victims and their family.
