GARRY BEWLEY FROM BLURTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
In May 2016, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence of a long-standing pattern of child exploitation involving Garry Bewley, a 65-year-old resident of Blurton. The investigation was initiated after police received information suggesting Bewley had been accessing and downloading indecent images of children over an extended period. On November 3, police officers executed a search warrant at Bewley's residence in Blurton, Staffordshire. Upon arrival, they confronted him with their suspicions regarding his online activities related to child abuse images. Bewley did not deny the allegations; instead, he openly admitted that he had been viewing such material on the internet for more than a decade.
During the raid, officers seized two computers and a memory stick from his home. Subsequent analysis of these devices revealed a disturbing collection of over 500 indecent images and videos depicting children. The content was classified into different categories based on severity: 113 images and videos fell into Category A, indicating the most serious material; 68 were classified as Category B; and the remaining 323 were in Category C. The images primarily depicted boys and girls aged between 10 and 14, with some children as young as eight years old.
Bewley explained to police that he had been actively searching for these images on his computer and admitted to keeping some of them, transferring others onto his memory stick. He also disclosed that some images had been downloaded from the internet onto his devices. His preference was reportedly for images of girls aged 10 to 12.
At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Bewley pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including six counts of making indecent photographs of a child and six counts of possessing such images. Prosecutor Brian McKenna detailed the case, emphasizing the severity of the material found and Bewley's long-term engagement with this illegal activity.
In mitigation, defense lawyer Jason Holt highlighted the personal consequences Bewley had already faced, including the loss of his reputation and employment. Holt explained that Bewley's offending was triggered by a redundancy he experienced ten years prior. The lawyer expressed that Bewley was remorseful and eager to cooperate with probation services to understand the root causes of his behavior and prevent future offenses.
Judge Paul Glenn sentenced Bewley to a three-year community order. The judge also mandated that Bewley participate in a community sex offender group work program, believing that there was a reasonable chance for rehabilitation. Additionally, Bewley was placed on the sex offenders' register and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years. The judge emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, "These were real children being abused and no doubt irreparably damaged."
