STALKER SENTENCED AFTER SENDING NUMEROUS MESSAGES
Gareth Hopps, a resident of Newtown, received a community order lasting one year after he was convicted of stalking his former partner.A restraining order was also granted, preventing him from contacting the victim for the next 12 months.
The 46-year-old appeared before Welshpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, May 12, where he admitted to the offence of stalking without causing alarm or distress.
The offences occurred between January 10 and February 23 in Newtown, with Hopps claiming he believed it was acceptable to contact her.
The court heard that he had made phone calls to the victim, repeatedly walked past her home, and sent her numerous unwanted messages.
Hopps, of Cledan in Treowen, Newtown, was handed a 12-month community order to include 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
He must also pay a £200 fine, £400 court costs and a £114 victim surcharge, The restraining order not to contact his victim for 12 months, but magistrates decided not to award compensation for fear of exacerbating the situation.
