GALE MAITLAND FROM WISHAW SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN CARBARNS WEST

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wishaw, Gale Elizabeth Maitland, born on 15 February 1967 and residing at Carbarns West, was found guilty of severe animal neglect in 2019. The investigation revealed that Maitland kept five cats and a dog in conditions that were not only deplorable but also hazardous to the animals' health and well-being.

Her home was discovered after a concerned postal worker tipped off authorities. Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) inspectors responded promptly to the report and arrived at Maitland’s residence, only to be met with a scene of utter chaos and filth. The inspectors described the environment as one of the worst they had encountered, with the entire property in a state of disarray and overwhelming with foul odors.

According to the depute fiscal Abby Seal, the police had received an anonymous call in March from a Royal Mail worker who had visited the property during her shift. She noticed the front door was slightly open and observed that the house appeared trashed, with a significant mess inside. The worker also reported seeing a dog confined in a cage, visibly distressed. The house was filled with rubbish, clothing, bin bags, and discarded takeaway containers strewn across the hall and stairway.

Inspectors found several cats scavenging for food from moldy takeaway boxes, while animal feces and urine were evident on furniture throughout the house. The kitchen was particularly disturbing, with a tan crossbreed dog confined in a crate on the floor. The crate was described as being in a horrendous state, with a deep accumulation of feces and leftover food several inches high, indicating neglect and poor hygiene. The dog appeared to be in a distressed condition.

Furthermore, a downstairs toilet was being used as a large waste disposal area, with stacked bin bags reaching six feet high. The smell of ammonia from three cat litter trays was overpowering, described by inspectors as the worst they had ever encountered. The master bedroom was equally filthy, with a small cat seen eating from a partially eaten pizza box. Photographs of each animal were taken and the animals were subsequently taken to the Lanarkshire rehoming centre for care and assessment.

During the court proceedings, defense lawyer Kauser Iqbal stated that Maitland’s actions were not deliberate. She explained that her client was under immense stress due to her father’s health issues and long working hours. Iqbal emphasized that Maitland was genuinely remorseful and had taken steps to improve her living conditions, including replacing all furniture and carpets in her home. She also noted that the distress caused by the removal of her animals was significant.

As part of her sentence, Maitland was ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, she received a lifelong ban on keeping dogs, a measure aimed at preventing future neglect. While two of her cats, named Chance and Loki, will be returned to her, the remaining three cats and the dog will be rehomed to ensure their safety and well-being.

This case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the ongoing efforts of authorities to protect vulnerable animals from neglect and cruelty in Wishaw and the surrounding areas.
