LONDON RAPIST FILIP ION SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS IN JAIL
A 'dangerous and violent' rapist has been jailed after he was tracked down using DNA from a robbery he committed a month after the attack.Filip Ion, aged 38, was sentenced to nine years in jail at Wood Green Crown Court yesterday for the rape of a woman in September last year, and an additional four years for the robbery of another woman in October.
The attack occurred after she left Finsbury Park Station shortly after midnight on September 2 last year, initially luring her into offering help under the pretence he was in distress.
When she realized no problem, she continued her way, but Ion followed her into Parkland Walk, where he assaulted her and subjected her to rape.
Police obtained a DNA profile from the crime scene, but it did not match any on the National DNA Database.
He was eventually traced after robbing a woman on Green Lanes a little over a month later, when he followed her after she left Manor House station, hitting her from behind and attempting to stop her screams before stealing her handbag and fleeing.
The victim helped police identify Ion, leading to his arrest.
During the investigation, police matched his DNA from the robbery to the one from the rape scene.
He initially denied the attack but later pleaded guilty to both offences in February due to overwhelming evidence.
Detective Inspector Simon Dobinson from the Sapphire Command stated, 'This dangerous and violent offender has been removed from the streets and no longer poses a threat to women.
The success of this investigation highlights the teamwork between borough and Sapphire officers from the initial response to the incidents to presenting a strong case ready for trial.'
