MOTHER CONVICTED OF NEGLECT AND CAUSING HER BABY'S DEATH IN BRENT
A woman who searched the internet for phrases such as "I want to give up my child" has been convicted of her daughter's death.At Harrow Crown Court, it was stated that 25-year-old Fartun Jamal kept her 11-month-old daughter Nafahat in a home that was described as chaotic and unclean in Brent.
Nafahat died on March 13, 2019, from a chest infection after enduring weeks of neglect from Jamal.
She was found guilty of causing the death through neglect and also convicted on two child cruelty charges related to Nafahat.
Additionally, a third charge of cruelty toward another child was established.
Records showed that Jamal performed several internet searches in early 2019, including “I can't cope with my child anymore” and “I want to give up my child,” while she was living with Nafahat.
Despite knowing her daughter was ill, with a high temperature and reduced appetite, Jamal did not seek medical help.
Social services had previously visited her residence on Kingfisher Way in Brent; residents reported seeing a broken cot and a cluttered environment filled with takeaway boxes, dirty plates, and nappies.
Social workers went to the home on February 22 after a babysitter raised concerns; at that visit, the home was somewhat cleaner, though another unannounced visit was scheduled for the day Nafahat died.
After a neighbor contacted emergency services, Jamal told paramedics she had found her daughter’s body after dreaming Nafahat had “stopped breathing.” Jamal, who experienced a difficult upbringing and moved to the UK from Somalia at a young age without her mother, described herself as having become “depressed” and “anxious” due to the hardships of parenting with little ongoing support.
She will face sentencing at a future date.
