A 23-year-old man, Farhad Safi, who was convicted of murdering his wife and trying to escape the country, has received a life sentence.
Residing in Eastdown Park, Lewisham, Safi was found guilty at the Old Bailey of the killing of 21-year-old Orina Morawiec.
The court heard that Ms Morawiec was discovered with numerous stab wounds at her home after she failed to attend a planned meeting with her mother in August 2013.
Safi was sentenced to a minimum term of 17 years in prison.
During the trial, he claimed that a rival gang was responsible for his wife’s death to shift blame onto others, asserting that he believed her murder was gang-related violence meant to target him.
However, Safi was unable to provide a truthful explanation for why he committed the murder.
Two days after the incident, he was observed walking near the Channel Tunnel, and authorities stated that he had not given any credible justification for his actions.
