INVERNESS CHILDCARE WORKER STRUCK OFF FOR ABUSE OF TRUST AND EMBEZZLEMENT
Emma Thomas has come under scrutiny following significant breaches of professional conduct. In November 2022, she was employed as a residential childcare worker when she was discovered to have formed a sexual relationship with the mother of a child who had lived at her care home, shortly after the child’s departure.
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) carried out an investigation and found that she exploited her position as a childcare worker to foster this inappropriate relationship, which developed through her role supporting the child.
The SSSC highlighted that her actions blurred the boundaries of professional relationships and could cause confusion and emotional distress to the young person involved, AA.
They pointed out that Emma Thomas lacked insight, remorse, and showed a failure to understand the consequences of her actions, which increased the risk of recurrence.
As a response, her registration was revoked by the SSSC to protect public safety.
About a year later, she was found guilty of embezzling £3,548.29 while working as a trading support manager at Argos in Inverness Retail Park, with her court hearing on December 21, 2023.
The Scottish Social Services Council characterized her conviction as a deliberate, dishonest breach of trust and a violation of the law, which falls well below the expected standards of someone working with vulnerable individuals.
The report also mentioned her lack of engagement with investigations and absence of remorse, warning that her behavior could be repeated, thus continuing to pose risks to public safety.
As a result, she was removed from the social care register and classified as a sexual abuser (category 10), reflecting the gravity of her misconduct.
