COVENTRY GRAN KILLS GRANDSON IN DELUSIONAL SCHIZOPHRENIA OUTBURST
A woman named Elena Anghel, aged 51 and originally from Romania, was responsible for the death of her five-year-old grandson, David-Mario Lazar, in Coventry on January 25 of the previous year.
She committed the act by stabbing the child at their residence on Poplar Road in Earlsdon.
The young boy sustained 29 cuts caused by sharp force injuries and died as a result of a stab wound.
During court proceedings, Anghel pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, citing paranoid schizophrenia that caused her to experience delusions.
The judge indicated that she had, in effect, lost touch with reality, and noted that she would not have harmed or killed Mario had she not been seriously ill.
Although she had no prior convictions, she had an extensive treatment history in Romania for psychotic and depressive conditions.
The court sentenced her to indefinite detention under a hospital order.
David-Mario’s mother described feeling devastated, emphasizing that her son was loved by his grandmother and that there had been no prior indications of mental illness or abuse.
