EDWARD MCGAFFNEY CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN AYR AND BLAIRHALL

In December 2017, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence of child exploitation during a police search at a residence in Blairhall. Officers discovered electronic devices containing indecent images of children, which led to the arrest and subsequent court appearance of Edward McGaffney, a 52-year-old man now residing at Princes Court in Ayr.

McGaffney faced serious charges in Dunfermline Sheriff Court, where he admitted to possessing indecent images of children between June 29, 2012, and May 11, 2017. The offenses spanned across his previous address in South Avenue, Blairhall, as well as other locations. Additionally, he confessed to actively downloading such illicit material, further implicating him in the ongoing investigation.

According to Deputy Fiscal Azrah Yousaf, police received a tip-off in May that prompted a search warrant for McGaffney’s home. During the search, officers discovered a mobile phone stored within a locked cabinet. The device was found alongside a collection of young girls’ underwear, raising further concerns about the nature of the material stored there. The authorities seized the phone and multiple computers for forensic analysis.

Examination of the digital devices revealed a disturbing array of images. On a laptop, investigators found photographs depicting a young girl, estimated to be around three or four years old, being held while she was naked. Police believed these images had been taken at a property where McGaffney previously resided in the Blairhall area. Another image showed a young boy sleeping while naked, adding to the evidence of child exploitation.

In total, the devices contained approximately 370 illegal images, a number that underscores the severity of the case. During police interviews, McGaffney chose to remain silent, offering a 'no comment' response to all questions posed to him.

Further details emerged from a woman who was present in the images. She explained that the photograph of the young girl was taken after the child had been removed from a bath. She expressed her disapproval of the photograph being taken and stated she was unaware that the image had been saved on the device, highlighting her lack of consent and the disturbing nature of the content.

Following the investigation, Sheriff Craig McSherry ordered that McGaffney be placed on the sex offenders’ register. The case has been adjourned, and McGaffney is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on January 29, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined.
