DYLON MCGREGOR SENTENCED IN GLASGOW AND GLASTONBURY FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE

A man identified as Dylan McGregor has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting and raping a vulnerable woman. The assault took place at a flat located in the Springburn area of Glasgow, where McGregor carried out his attack on April 8, 2022.

McGregor, aged 31, initially denied any involvement in the incident during his trial. However, after a thorough legal process, the jury found him guilty of the charges, which included both sexual assault and rape. The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where the presiding judge, Lord Thomas Welsh KC, delivered the verdict and sentencing.

During the sentencing, Judge Welsh emphasized the gravity of the offence, stating, “You have been convicted of a very serious offence against the complainer, who was in a vulnerable position at the time, and a stranger to you when you raped her.” The judge highlighted the victim’s vulnerability and the fact that McGregor was a stranger to her, which compounded the severity of the crime.

Judge Welsh also addressed McGregor’s conduct during the trial, noting that he had given evidence denying the offence. Despite this, the jury believed the victim’s account, leading to his conviction. The judge further criticized McGregor for showing no remorse or empathy for the victim following the crime, indicating that his attitude was concerning and indicative of a lack of accountability.

In addition to the prison sentence, the judge ordered that McGregor be placed under supervision in the community for an additional three years upon his release. This supervision, known as being on licence, is intended to protect the public from potential harm and allows for his return to custody if he breaches any conditions.

McGregor’s legal representative, defence solicitor advocate Calum Weir, stated that his client maintained his denial of the offence throughout the proceedings. Weir described the risk posed by McGregor as “medium” and urged the court to consider leniency given the circumstances.

Furthermore, the court imposed a non-harassment order, which prohibits McGregor from contacting or attempting to contact the victim indefinitely. The sentencing was viewed via a TV link from prison, where McGregor was informed that he will be registered as a sex offender for an indefinite period, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
