DYLAN CORBETT

A man who admitted to deriving his understanding of sex from viewing pornography has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison.

Dylan Corbett was convicted of attacking a teenage girl in a woodland area near Wishaw, Lanarkshire, on May 22, 2019.

The incident involved the girl and Corbett engaging in initially consensual sexual activity.

Afterwards, Corbett made lewd comments, which led the girl to slap him and ask him to leave, but he persisted.

The 21-year-old, who is from Abernethy and was working as a refuse collector, received a prison term of three years and nine months at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register.

During the court proceedings, it was mentioned that a social work report hinted at the possibility of avoiding custody, but the judge, Lady Haldane, dismissed this suggestion.

The judge described the assault as having a significant impact on the victim.

Corbett maintained his innocence and claimed that any sexual activity was consensual.

His legal representative noted that Corbett appeared to have learned inappropriate behavior from watching pornography, suggesting that this influenced his actions.

The pre-sentencing report indicated that custody was the most probable outcome, although it also mentioned alternative measures other than imprisonment—an unusual consideration for such cases.

Lady Haldane stated she carefully weighed all factors, including the relevant guidelines for offenders under 25, but emphasized that rape remains one of the most serious crimes in court.
