HOLYHEAD MAN JAILED FOR PERSISTENT VIOLENCE AND ABUSE TOWARDS EX-PARTNER
A man accused of severe violence and coercive control has received a prison sentence after subjecting his former partner to a pattern of constant abuse.Dwayne Thomas, aged 33 and resident of Henry Street in Holyhead, appeared before Caernarfon Crown Court for sentencing after admitting to controlling or coercive conduct and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent.
Prosecutor Gareth Bellis explained that the victim was Kimberley Louise Edwards, Thomas' ex-partner with whom he had a four-year relationship.
Throughout this period, Thomas exhibited frequent violent and controlling actions, with weekly incidents involving strangulation, stamping, punching, kicking, and hitting her with objects like a glass ashtray and a hoover pipe.
He also verbally assaulted her, issued threats with blades, and once forced a pizza cutter into her mouth while threatening to punch her.
His controlling behaviour included restricting her movements, spending habits, and daily activities, as well as preventing her from seeking necessary medical treatment.
The violence intensified in May when Thomas attempted to seriously harm her after a night out; he entered her home through a window and assaulted her physically—headbutting, punching, and kicking her—resulting in broken teeth.
When police arrived after reports of him shouting at her publicly and refusing to settle down, he was detained.
His legal representative acknowledged the pre-sentence report pointed to a significant risk of serious harm and noted his lack of remorse, but she urged consideration of rehabilitation options.
The court sentenced Thomas to nearly five years in prison—specifically 4 years and 8 months—and imposed a three-year extended licence, along with a lifelong restraining order to ensure her continued safety.
The judge noted his longstanding violent behaviour, control issues tied to substance use, and his failure to show remorse.
