DR CHRISTOPHER DOYLE FROM WIDNES SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND MAIL THREATS TO THERESA MAY
In August 2020, Dr Christopher Doyle, a resident of Widnes, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison after being found guilty of possessing a vast collection of indecent images of children and sending threatening mail to high-profile political figures.The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of Doyle's actions and the bizarre circumstances surrounding his mail threats.
It was revealed that Doyle, aged 54, had accumulated over 300,000 indecent images of children on his computer.
Although he had previously admitted to downloading these illicit files, the severity of his possession was a major concern for authorities.
The police investigation was further complicated by Doyle’s attempt to send a threatening letter to then-Prime Minister Theresa May, which included a mixture of provocative imagery and a suspicious white powder.
The letter was addressed to "Theresa May, C/O: The Nazi Party at the House of Commons in Westminster, London," and contained a poster depicting the Prime Minister with her head severed, alongside the Russian word "Pravda." Inside a second envelope, Doyle included a cartoon of Alexander Litvinenko, the former Russian spy who died after being poisoned in London in 2006.
The message also criticized Theresa May’s policies regarding alleged Russian involvement in the poisoning of Litvinenko and Sergei Skripal, who survived an attempted assassination in Salisbury in 2018.
The suspicious white powder found within the envelope was later identified as citric acid, a harmless substance.
However, prosecutors argued that Doyle intended for whoever opened the letter to believe it was a dangerous poison, thereby causing alarm and fear.
Authorities acted swiftly after a worker at a secure mail screening facility in London identified the suspicious letter during routine checks.
The mail, which was stamped March 28 at Warrington Mail Centre, was flagged around 8:45 a.m.
on April 5 of the previous year.
The staff, wearing protective gear, examined the envelope and discovered the white powder.
They then evacuated the area and contacted emergency services.
Specialist police officers conducted tests on the substance and seized the evidence.
Further investigation revealed that the envelope’s stamp contained a DNA profile linking it directly to Doyle.
When questioned about the incident on May 24, Doyle initially denied putting any powder in the letter, claiming he only wrote to Theresa May.
During police interviews, he maintained this denial but admitted to sending similar letters to Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn.
Doyle explained that the letters to the Conservative politicians contained a card criticizing their stance on Russia.
Overall, the case highlighted Doyle’s disturbing behavior, combining criminal possession of child abuse images with threatening correspondence aimed at prominent political figures.
His actions prompted a serious legal response, culminating in his sentencing to nearly three years in prison, reflecting the gravity of his offenses and the potential threat his mail posed to public safety.
