EDINBURGH YOUTH JAILED FOR HORRIFIC RAPE AND BREAK-IN
A young woman teacher endured a terrifying 12-hour ordeal during which she was forced to take pills and was then repeatedly raped, the High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday.During the hours following a break-in, a 20-year-old youth named Donald Gibson, also known as Westwater, broke into her home, a cottage in the Stirling area, and subjected her to violence and sexual assault.
Gibson, who was described as a prisoner, threatened her with scissors, made her lie on the floor, blindfolded her, robbed her of valuables, and then later raped her in a bedroom in the early morning.
Gibson admitted breaking into the woman's home, assaulting and robbing her, and also blindfolding, assaulting, and raping her.
The offences are said to have taken place on March 25 or 26 of that year.
Passing sentence, Lord Dunpark told Gibson: "You are only 20 but you have a long list of previous convictions for housebreaking.
You are obviously a menace to society." The judge stated that Gibson had assaulted and raped a 23-year-old woman during what was described as a "terrible ordeal." The sentence was eight years in a Young Offenders' Institution for the rape and three years for housebreaking and robbery, to be served concurrently.
Prosecutor Hugh Matthews explained that during the 12-hour ordeal, the victim thought Gibson was trying to inject her with a substance, and he forced her to swallow tranquillisers before raping her.
Afterward, she lay blindfolded until she heard no more noise and then contacted police.
Defense counsel Steve MacGibbon argued Gibson broke into the home out of desperation due to a gambling addiction and had no intent of assaulting the woman, showing remorse by attempting to mutilate himself.
