BIRMINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR DROWNING EX-GIRLFRIEND AFTER JEALOUSY
Desmond Thomas, a 51-year-old man driven by jealousy, committed a severe murder against his former partner Laura Holden, aged 35, following her revelation that she had found new love while on holiday in Turkey. The court was informed that Thomas had a history of violence and a tumultuous relationship with Miss Holden, with evidence indicating that he had previously inflicted harm upon her during their 19-year courtship.
On August 3, Thomas went to Laura’s residence and, during an argument witnessed by their nine-year-old son, attacked her with a glass jar and a set of scales before drowning her in the bath.
The incident took place while their son was outside calling for his mother.
Investigations revealed that Laura had developed a friendship with a local man during her holiday, which sparked Thomas’s suspicions.
Evidence showed that Laura was planning to relocate overseas for a new life.
Thomas was apprehended shortly after the assault when found in a car filled with fumes.
A medical examiner stated that Laura was knocked unconscious by a blow to her head before being submerged in the bath.
He received a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years for the murder.
The judge described the killing as a brutal attack involving multiple weapons, driven by jealousy and a desire for control, and noted the devastating impact on the children, who would now grow up without their parents’ support.
The court expressed deep sympathy for Laura’s family, portraying her as a much-loved woman dedicated to her children, and condemned Thomas’s actions, which were motivated by possessiveness and jealousy.
