WIGAN MAN DENNIS SMALLEY SENTENCED FOR 40 YEARS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
In March 2016, a man from Wigan, Dennis Smalley, was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of sexually abusing 11 women and young girls over a span of nearly 45 years.Smalley, aged 65 and from Hindley, was found guilty in Liverpool Crown Court on multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
He received a 25-year prison sentence.
The court revealed that Smalley's abusive behavior began in 1971 and persisted until June 2015, making the total duration about 44 years.
His first victim endured more than 12 years of abuse, during which Smalley repeatedly raped her despite her desperate screams and pleas for him to stop.
His second victim, attacked initially in 1984, suffered through four years of rape and abuse.
Smalley treated her as an object for sex, raping her whenever he chose, even just days after she had given birth and was confined to bed with 44 stitches.
During this period, Smalley also sexually assaulted and raped several young girls, many of whom were as young as 15 when the abuse began.
The impact on his victims was profound; one developing a drug addiction as a consequence of the trauma.
One woman’s ordeal spanned 14 years, beginning when she was 19.
She was subjected to control over her clothing and diet, and was physically and mentally dominated by him.
Between 1989 and 2003, she was raped so frequently that she lost count.
In 1991, one of Smalley’s 14-year-old victims became pregnant after he assaulted her in his car.
She was forced to leave school, and due to the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy, the child was subsequently put up for adoption.
Despite his age, Smalley’s predatory behavior did not cease.
He continued to exploit young girls, including grooming a 15-year-old girl and assaulting her at his home.
He attempted to silence her by giving her an iPhone as a gift.
This case highlights decades of horrifying abuse and the lasting damage caused to his victims.
