WARRINGTON MAN WITH MILITARY BACKGROUND JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT
A man named Declan Taylor from Marsh House Lane has been sentenced to 36 months in prison after pleading guilty to strangulation and assault.
The incident occurred on April 2, when police responded to reports of a woman in obvious distress at Warrington Hospital's A&E department.
The victim, with whom Taylor had a domestic relationship, had ended it earlier that morning.
Court proceedings revealed that Taylor had attended her home at 5am, where he lost his temper during an argument, accused her of cheating, and physically assaulted her by punching and slapping her in the face and leg.
He then strangled her while making threats, which left her unable to breathe.
Taylor was subsequently arrested and initially denied assaulting her, claiming it was just a 'little argument.' It was also noted that his actions breached a suspended sentence order made in 2022 for drug-related offences.
The court heard that Taylor has a proven record of domestic violence, with 25 previous convictions for 46 offences, including 10 related to violence.
The defense argued that Taylor, who previously traveled to Ukraine and fought as a machine gunner in the Battle of Kyiv on a voluntary basis with the Foreign Legion, had experienced trauma from his battlefield experiences.
However, Judge Louise Brandon emphasized Taylor’s history of violence and sentenced him to immediate custody for 36 months, citing his high risk of causing serious harm in the future.
