HUCKNALL MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT
A drunk and drug-fuelled cowardly woman-beater attacked his ex-partner in the street leading to her suffering a seizure.Nottingham Crown Court heard how jealous Dean Stephenson also grabbed the victim's phone from her and “smashed it into oblivion” during the incident in Hucknall.
The 20-year-old painter and decorator then kicked the car a friend of the woman had brought her to the scene in.
Now he has 18 months to stay out of trouble or risk being sent to prison.
Handing him a nine-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, Judge Mark Watson said: “Given what she says about your treatment of her towards the end of your relationship when it is clear she wanted out there was jealousy and that culminated on your attack on her and that was a cowardly act on your part.
"You grabbed her by the neck, pulled her to the floor and while she was on the floor you struck her and that induced a panic attack.
That caused her to lose breath and she had a seizure.
You then took your aggression out on the person who drove her to the scene and you then smashed your ex-partner’s phone to oblivion.
"You were under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time, this was rightly described as a domestic violence incident both of which aggravate the offence." Steven Gosnell, prosecuting, said Stephenson and the victim began a relationship in 2020 when they were teenagers and the pair had a son in March 2021 but after he was born their relationship went into decline.
He said in 2022 she began a new relationship and on June 17, last year, she was out with friends when the defendant called her at around 11pm to say he had nowhere to sleep that night so she agreed to meet him.
The prosecutor said a friend and her friend’s partner, who was driving, went to Ashgate Road, in Hucknall, where Stephenson was acting aggressively.
Mr Gosnell said: “She got out of the car and there was an argument followed by a scuffle during which the defendant accepts he put his arm around her neck and pulled her to the floor.
While she was on the floor he accepts he struck her to the face.
“She suffered a panic attack he threw her bag across the road and then got her phone and smashed it on the floor, he says around 20 times.
He then said to her ‘this is your fault, you’re the reason I did this to you’.
“He then went to the car which had driven the victim to the scene and kicked it.” Mr Gosnell said Stephenson, of Beauvale Road, Hucknall, was arrested, interviewed and told police he had been to the Half Moon pub in Hucknall.
He accepted he pushed her to the floor and broke her phone.
The defendant pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage.
Digby Johnson, mitigating, said his client and the victim had met very young and on the day of the assault his client had drunk “far too much” alcohol and taken drugs.
As well as the suspended sentence, the judge ordered Stephenson to pay £500 compensation to both his ex-partner for the assault and her friend whose car he damaged.
