DEAN JEFFREYS FROM LLANELLI SENTENCED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND BLACKMAIL INVOLVING DECOY PROFILES
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and exploitation, Dean Jeffreys, a 25-year-old man from Llanelli, was found guilty of attempting to engage in sexual communication with what he believed were underage girls.The incident took place during a police operation aimed at catching online offenders, and the court proceedings revealed the extent of Jeffreys' predatory behavior.
According to court reports, Jeffreys initiated contact with what he thought were young girls named Holly and Sophie on the Kik messaging platform during November and December of 2019.
However, these profiles were actually decoys operated by adult investigators working for the National Crime Agency, designed to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.
The decoys made it explicitly clear that they were only 12 years old, yet Jeffreys persisted in his attempts to solicit explicit images and sexual favors.
Prosecutor Tom Scapens detailed that Jeffreys offered to pay the decoys £150 in exchange for nude photographs, promising to send the money via Amazon or PayPal accounts.
Despite the decoys expressing hesitation and concern about the inappropriate nature of his requests, Jeffreys reassured them that their interactions would remain secret and safe.
His desperation was evident when he pleaded with one of the decoys, Sophie, repeatedly, saying, “please, please, please with a cherry on top,” as he begged her to send explicit images.
Jeffreys' behavior was particularly aggressive with Sophie, whom he called his “little princess” and claimed they were in a relationship.
He engaged in a series of sexualized phone conversations with her, further demonstrating his grooming tactics.
At one point, Sophie sent Jeffreys a photograph of a woman’s midriff, which was actually an image of an adult woman who appeared much younger.
Jeffreys then used this image to threaten and blackmail her, attempting to coerce her into sending more explicit pictures.
The court heard that Jeffreys launched a campaign of grooming, bullying, harassment, and threats.
He repeatedly told Sophie that he would post the compromising image on Facebook for all her friends to see unless she complied with his demands.
He also manipulated her by calling her his “slave” and threatening punishment or reward based on her obedience.
Throughout these interactions, Jeffreys genuinely believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl, which underscores the disturbing nature of his actions.
Law enforcement traced the phone number used by Jeffreys to his residence in Llanelli, where police executed a search warrant.
Confronted by officers, Jeffreys admitted to using an app for “role playing,” claiming he did not understand why it turned him on.
He also disclosed that he had been engaging in these online activities from his home in Princess Court, Llanelli, where he lived with his parents and other family members.
Jeffreys had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted sexual communication with a child and two counts of attempting to incite a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
During sentencing, Judge Geraint Walters noted that a pre-sentence report indicated Jeffreys posed a potential danger to children.
The judge expressed hope that custodial rehabilitation efforts could mitigate this risk.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Walters referenced a recent Court of Appeal ruling that emphasized the harm intended by such offenses rather than the actual harm caused.
He warned that individuals involved in similar behavior should expect significantly longer sentences in the future.
Taking into account Jeffreys’ guilty pleas, the judge sentenced him to two years and four months in prison, with a one-third reduction for his cooperation.
Jeffreys will serve up to half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence under the UK government’s early release scheme.
He will also be registered as a sex offender for the next ten years and subject to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his access to the internet for a similar period.
The judge concluded by condemning the delay in bringing the case to court, describing it as “unacceptable,” emphasizing the importance of swift justice in cases involving online exploitation.
