DEAN AND MICHELLE MARSDEN FROM OSWALDTWISTLE SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY INVOLVING LABRADOR CHARLIE

Dean Marsden, born on 22 November 1978, and Michelle Louise Marsden, born around 1980, both residents of Union Road in Oswaldtwistle, Accrington BB5 3NW, faced serious legal consequences after neglecting their Labrador dog, Charlie, who was suffering from a range of untreated health issues. The couple was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to their pet and failing in their duty of care, which resulted in prolonged pain and discomfort for Charlie.

According to the prosecution, represented by Paul Ridehalgh on behalf of the RSPCA, Charlie was surrendered by a member of the public who had found him wandering the streets of Oswaldtwistle. Upon examination by veterinary professionals, it was revealed that the dog was suffering from significant health problems, including extensive hair loss, anemia, and an underactive thyroid. The vets also noted that Charlie had long nails, a clear sign that he was not receiving adequate exercise or attention.

Veterinary experts concluded that Charlie had been enduring these conditions for some time, yet all of his ailments could have been effectively treated if proper care had been administered. The neglect was deemed to have caused him unnecessary suffering over an extended period.

During the court proceedings, Zabair Afzal, representing the Marsdens, argued that their neglect was not intentional. He explained that the couple had initially noticed skin issues with Charlie last year and had attempted to treat him with creams and shampoos, which temporarily alleviated the symptoms. However, the condition flared up again in March of the current year. Afzal pointed out that the pet store where they purchased the medication had since closed, complicating their efforts to obtain further treatment.

He further stated that the Marsdens had made several attempts to care for Charlie but admitted that their efforts were insufficient. Financial constraints prevented them from taking the dog to a veterinarian for proper treatment, which contributed to the worsening of his condition.

In sentencing, the court imposed an eight-week curfew on the couple, ordered them to pay an £85 victim surcharge, and banned them from keeping any pets for a period of ten years, which will expire in November 2028. Additionally, a deprivation order was issued for Charlie, allowing the RSPCA to re-home him to ensure he receives the proper care he was denied. The case highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the legal consequences of neglecting animal welfare.
