DAVID THORLEY FROM CARMARTHEN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON CHILDREN IN SWANSEA

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Carmarthen and the wider region of west Wales, David Thorley, a 56-year-old primary school headteacher, was sentenced to two years in prison following a lengthy and highly publicized trial at Swansea Crown Court. The court proceedings, which lasted over a month, culminated in a jury's verdict that found Thorley guilty of nine counts of sexually assaulting children under the age of 13.

Thorley's arrest and subsequent conviction have sparked intense debate among educators, legal professionals, and the public. As he was led away from the court, visibly shocked and subdued, family, friends, and former colleagues expressed their dismay, asserting that his conviction unfairly tarnishes the reputation of male teachers across the country. They argue that the case highlights the precarious position male educators find themselves in, often under suspicion despite their intentions.

Residing in Carmarthen, Thorley faced a series of serious allegations after a jury trial that concluded in May. The charges stemmed from incidents involving four young girls, all under the age of 13, over a period extending to 2006. Initially, he was accused of 19 separate assaults, but during the trial, eight charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence. Ultimately, the jury found him guilty of nine counts, which involved inappropriate conduct with the victims.

The court heard distressing details of the abuse, including an incident where Thorley allegedly took a girl to the hospital after she had broken her collarbone. During this visit, he reportedly took her into a bathroom cubicle, where he inappropriately touched her after helping her remove her trousers. The girl provided evidence via video link, describing how Thorley joined her in the cubicle and engaged in inappropriate behavior. Additionally, he was found guilty of examining another young girl in a manner deemed inappropriate after she visited his office, claiming she was unwell.

Further allegations included inappropriate touching of two girls who were the children of family friends during swimming trips. These incidents, along with others, contributed to the conviction. Despite the severity of the charges, Thorley maintained his innocence throughout the trial, protesting his innocence until the very end. His defense argued that he was simply a caring teacher whose approach to education was misinterpreted, and that he had not committed any crimes.

His wife, Mary Thorley, aged 55, who is an ordained minister and the head teacher of the Model School in Carmarthen, publicly reaffirmed her unwavering belief in her husband's innocence. She expressed her concern that his conviction could have far-reaching consequences for male teachers everywhere. "I think it puts in jeopardy any male within the teaching profession," she stated. "Evidence in court showed that all current procedures were followed and yet a man remains in custody. I now believe that my male colleagues will be subject to impossible working conditions that this will lead to."

Mary Thorley also emphasized the emotional toll the case has taken on their family, stating, "This has cost us all a great deal of distress and grief. But however much longer it takes, we will maintain and prove David's innocence."

Supporters and colleagues of Thorley have voiced similar sentiments. One close associate remarked, "David's problem is that he was just too caring. He treated all children as though they were his own. If this situation had been the other way round and it had been a woman in this situation, would she have come to court? And if she had, would she have been found guilty? No."

The case continues to evoke strong opinions, with many calling for a fair reassessment of the circumstances surrounding the allegations and the subsequent conviction of David Thorley in Swansea.
