DAVID SURRIDGE FROM WARWICK CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ABUSE AGAINST TEENAGE GIRL
A former police officer with a disturbing history of sexual misconduct, David Surridge, has been found guilty of grooming and sexually abusing a teenage girl during the 1980s. The conviction brings to light a troubling case that spans several decades, highlighting issues of accountability and justice in cases of historical abuse.During the period in question, Surridge was serving as a Special Constable before advancing to a full-time police officer. His victim, who was between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time, endured a series of manipulative and abusive acts carried out by Surridge. According to court records and the victim’s testimony, Surridge showered her with gifts, bought her alcohol, and took her out for extended periods, often for days at a time. These actions, initially seemingly benign or affectionate, gradually escalated into sexual abuse, causing profound trauma to the young girl.
The case remained unresolved for many years until recent events prompted the victim to come forward. She revealed that her courage was reignited after watching a television programme about grooming, which made her realize she was not alone and that her experiences were not her fault. In an emotional interview, she shared that she had previously blamed herself for the abuse but now understands that she was a victim of manipulation and exploitation.
On August 12, at Warwick Crown Court, Surridge, now aged 70 and residing in New Green Park, Coventry, pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault against the girl. His admission of guilt marked a significant moment in the case, bringing some measure of justice after decades of silence. Surridge was subsequently bailed and is scheduled to return to Warwick Crown Court for sentencing on September 27.
Throughout the investigation, law enforcement officials expressed their support for the victim and emphasized the importance of believing and supporting survivors of sexual abuse. Detective Constable Heather Webb, who led the inquiry, stated, “My thoughts are with the victim who has shown great bravery in reporting her ordeal after so much time has passed. I hope she can take some comfort from this guilty plea. Like many victims of grooming she blamed herself for what happened. To be clear if you are a victim of sexual abuse, you are never to blame and there are people who will listen to you and offer support.”
Additionally, Detective Superintendent Paul Thompson of Warwickshire Police underscored that Surridge was aware that his actions were wrong and that justice would be pursued. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to holding offenders accountable, regardless of how much time has elapsed since the crimes occurred, and to supporting victims in their journey toward healing.
