WARWICK MAN CONVICTED OF CONTROLLING AND COERCIVE DOMESTIC ABUSE
Goggbridge Lane resident David Sean Thompson of Warwick was convicted of controlling and coercive behavior along with domestic abuse offenses. The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, described Thompson as manipulative and controlling, forbidding her from maintaining contact with male friends and controlling her social interactions.
She recounted her ordeal, stating: “Thompson was controlling and coercive, stopping me from contacting male friends and dictating who I could be friends with.
The stress began to affect me; I stopped having opinions because he would get upset over minor things.
If he hadn’t criticized me for a while, I’d know it was coming, as he couldn’t go long without making me apologize—sometimes for things that hadn’t even happened.” The abuse reached a peak at a birthday party for a friend in Chesterfield in October 2019, where police intervened after an incident.
Thompson was arrested and received an 18-month jail sentence, which was suspended for two years, along with a £2,000 fine and a commitment to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
The investigation, a joint effort by Warwickshire and Derbyshire police, led to the victim being referred for counseling.
The court reviewed Thompson’s history of violent and coercive conduct.
The woman’s bravery in supporting the legal process was recognized, as her testimony contributed to stopping further abuse.
Detective Sergeant Emma Mackay expressed admiration for her courage and urged other victims to seek help and report abuse.
