In a case that has shocked the community and brought to light decades of disturbing criminal behavior, David Stingemore, a man with a long history of child sexual offenses, has been sentenced to an additional six years in prison for heinous acts committed against a young girl in Scarborough during the 1980s.

Stingemore, now aged 68, was already serving an extensive prison term of 18 and a half years for a series of child sex crimes committed in the 1980s, including multiple rapes of a young girl in Scarborough. These previous convictions, which also involved indecent assaults on young boys, were part of a broader pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years. The court heard that Stingemore, who has lived in Eastfield and Barrowcliff, had a notorious history of sexual offenses dating back to his own childhood.

The latest revelations emerged in 2020 when a woman, now an adult, came forward to police, revealing the horrific abuse she endured at Stingemore’s hands when he was in his late 20s and early 30s. This victim’s courage in speaking out uncovered yet more disturbing details of Stingemore’s crimes. Initially, he denied the allegations during police interviews in May 2022, but he eventually admitted to two counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child. Prosecutor David Povall detailed that the indecent assault involved penetration on ten separate occasions, highlighting the severity and repeated nature of the abuse.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Stingemore’s criminal activities extended over a prolonged period, with the most recent sentence handed down in January 2020. At that time, he was convicted of a “campaign of rape” against another young girl in the 1980s, as well as indecently assaulting a young boy. The court heard that Stingemore’s victims suffered lifelong psychological trauma. The female victim described her life being torn apart by his evil acts, recounting how she struggled with her emotions, often crying over trivial matters, and found it difficult to trust or form relationships with men. She explained that she had sought medical help for anxiety and depression, which she attributed to the abuse.

Judge Simon Hickey, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of Stingemore’s latest admissions, stating that the defendant had subjected an extremely young girl to “degradation” and “prolonged, sustained” sexual attacks that caused her lifelong psychological harm. The judge sentenced Stingemore to six years and eight months in prison, a sentence to run consecutively with his existing term, effectively meaning he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Additionally, he was declared an “offender of particular concern,” requiring him to serve an extended three-year period on prison license if released, and he will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.

In a separate but related case from January 2020, Stingemore was convicted of multiple rapes, indecency, and assault against two victims in Scarborough. The court heard that he had launched a “campaign of rape” against a young girl, beginning when she was just a child, and continued his abuse into her teenage years. The girl, who was in tears during her victim impact statement, described how Stingemore’s actions had left her emotionally devastated, unable to trust others, and suffering from depression and anxiety. Her testimony detailed how she was forced to perform sex acts on Stingemore, who repeatedly told her that what he was doing was “normal,” and warned her not to tell anyone.

The male victim, also middle-aged, recounted how Stingemore had instilled fear in him, warning him to keep silent about the abuse. He described how he had struggled with flashbacks, nightmares, and feelings of self-hatred, which led him to attempt suicide. Both victims expressed the lifelong impact of Stingemore’s crimes, with the female victim stating she had been “petrified” and that her life had been “ripped apart” by his evil acts.

Stingemore’s defense team argued that he was remorseful, but the judge dismissed this, highlighting the calculated and bullying nature of his offenses. The court’s sentencing reflected the seriousness of his crimes, with Stingemore being sentenced to over 18 years in prison in 2020, and now receiving an additional six-year sentence. The judge underscored that Stingemore’s “unhealthy interest” in young girls and his manipulative behavior had caused irreparable harm to his victims, who will carry the scars for the rest of their lives.

Stingemore’s criminal history, which includes a previous conviction in 1987 for indecent assault on a young girl and sexual offenses against young boys, paints a disturbing picture of a man with a pattern of predatory behavior.
