DAVID RANSLEY FROM GILLINGHAM AND NEWINGTON SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE
In April 2009, a disturbing case concluded with the sentencing of David Ransley, a man from Gillingham and Newington, who was found guilty of heinous sexual offenses involving two young girls. Ransley's involvement with the Army cadets in Gillingham had previously been seen as a position of trust, but it was tragically exploited for his own depraved purposes.Ransley, aged 60 and residing at Frank Apps Close in Newington, faced multiple serious charges, including four counts of rape, two counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Despite his vehement denial of these allegations, the court convicted him based on what was described as overwhelming evidence that left little room for doubt.
During the trial, Judge Martin Joy emphasized the severity of Ransley's actions, stating that the evidence against him was clear and compelling. The judge remarked that the harm inflicted upon the victims would likely have lasting effects, indicating the profound and enduring trauma caused by Ransley's crimes.
In sentencing, Ransley was given a prison term of 15 years. The court also decided against imposing an indefinite prison sentence for public protection, citing his age as a factor—he was 60 years old at the time—and instead ordered a sexual offences prevention order to restrict his future contact with children. Additionally, Ransley was permanently placed on the sex offenders’ register, barring him from any future contact with minors under 16.
Detective Constable John Milham, who led the investigation, described Ransley as a dangerous predator who cynically abused the trust placed in him by the victims and their families for his own sexual gratification. He praised the bravery of the victims, acknowledging that their courage in coming forward was instrumental in bringing the case to court. Detective Milham expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would help the victims rebuild their lives, secure in the knowledge that Ransley would remain incarcerated for a significant period.
He also reaffirmed the police commitment to pursuing justice for all victims of child abuse, regardless of how much time had passed since the crimes occurred. The case serves as a stark reminder that those who commit such offenses will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable, ensuring that justice is served for the most vulnerable members of society.
