DAVID MIDDLETON CONNAH'S QUAY INFLAMED BY SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGE GIRL

In May 2002, a tragic case unfolded in Connah's Quay, Flintshire, involving David Middleton, a 64-year-old man known locally as a dedicated line-dance instructor and a respected member of his community. Despite his standing, Middleton was convicted of serious sexual offenses against a teenage girl, leading to his imprisonment for three years.

Middleton faced five counts of indecent assault, charges he vehemently denied. The case was brought before Chester Crown Court, where a jury deliberated for four hours before reaching a guilty verdict in April. The court heard that Middleton, who was also a former steelworker, exploited his position and trust to commit these heinous acts.

The incidents occurred between September 2000 and April 2001, beginning shortly after Middleton sent a Valentine’s Day card to the girl, who was only 14 at the time. The court was told that Middleton took the girl for drives along country lanes, where he would abuse her in secluded areas. He also manipulated circumstances to be alone with her, even as her relatives danced nearby in another room, unaware of his actions.

During the sentencing on the following Monday, Judge Roger Dutton condemned Middleton for taking advantage of the girl’s immaturity. The judge emphasized the profound impact the abuse had on her, revealing that she had self-harmed with a knife and overdosed on paracetamol tablets in an attempt to cope with her trauma.

Throughout the trial, the court was informed that Middleton’s inappropriate interest in the girl was not limited to the initial assaults. After she ceased attending his classes, Middleton reportedly began calling her at her home, further crossing boundaries. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, provided evidence via video link, describing the distress she endured.

Middleton claimed that his actions were a 'moment of madness' and insisted that his interest was not unhealthy. However, the jury was not convinced, and he was found guilty of the charges. The court’s proceedings revealed that Middleton had kissed the girl before subjecting her to multiple sexual assaults, actions that have left lasting scars.

In his sentencing, Judge Dutton made it clear that anyone in Middleton’s position who commits such offenses must face the consequences of losing their liberty. He warned Middleton that his actions had serious repercussions and underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable young people from individuals who cannot control their impulses.

As part of his punishment, Middleton was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further harm. This case has shocked the local community of Connah's Quay, highlighting the devastating effects of abuse and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding young people from exploitation.
