DAVID JONES AND HIS SHOCKING SEX CRIMES IN WREXHAM
A man from Wrexham, David Jones, was convicted and sentenced to extended prison time after a lengthy investigation into his series of sexual offences dating back several years. The case reached Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday, June 2, where Jones faced justice for his previous actions, including the rape of a woman in January 2015.
The prosecution, led by Patrick Gartland, detailed how Jones, at the time 22 years old, forcibly assaulted a young woman who cannot be publicly identified for legal reasons.
Despite the woman clearly rejecting his initial advances, Jones ignored her boundaries and forcibly climbed atop her, pinning her wrists down as she froze in terror.
The court heard that during the assault, the victim was overcome by fear and helplessness.
Throughout the attack, Jones reportedly told her coldly to "Just let me" when she begged him to stop.
He took further advantage of her vulnerability by telling her not to tell anyone about what had transpired that night.
Despite this, after the incident, Jones sent the victim a message containing a laughing-faced emoji and claimed through subsequent exchanges that he had done nothing wrong—an indication of his attitude and lack of remorse.
Initially, the victim chose not to report the assault, fearing disbelief or not being taken seriously.
However, her resolve grew stronger after Jones was convicted of another sexual assault earlier that same year.
It was that conviction, along with the details of his prior offending, which eventually compelled her to come forward and seek justice.
The court also heard about Jones' violent history, including an incident in October 2015, when he was arrested after again committing a brutal attack—this time in a car, where he forcibly and violently assaulted another woman.
Further, the record includes a historic sexual offence from his youth, adding to a troubling pattern of behaviour.
During the sentencing, the victim courageously delivered an emotional statement describing how her life has been permanently affected.
She revealed living with daily fears that have led her to distance herself from friends and family, and she shared that nightmares continue to haunt her, illustrating the deep and lasting trauma caused by Jones' actions.
Representing Jones, defence lawyer Oliver King acknowledged that there was no excuse for his client’s conduct.
He requested that the court consider the fact that Jones had admitted guilt late in the proceedings, arguing that this allowed spared the victim from enduring a stressful trial process.
King emphasized that Jones has been in continuous custody since 2016, during which time he has reflected on his actions.
He claimed that Jones now recognizes his previous sense of entitlement towards women as fundamentally wrong.
Initially, Jones was due to remain imprisoned until at least 2026, but Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones increased his sentence by seven years, meaning Jones will now serve a total of over fourteen years in prison.
Additionally, following his release, he will be subject to a four-year licence period.
The judge depicted Jones as an "arrogant" offender who, almost a decade after his first offence, committed a second rape along with other criminal acts.
The court labeled Jones as a "dangerous offender" and a "blatant liar," criticizing him for initially claiming an alibi during the attack.
The judge expressed a lack of confidence in any signs of remorse from Jones, emphasizing that his actions show no genuine contrition.
A lifelong restraining order was imposed to prevent any future contact with the victim, and Jones was also placed on the sex offenders register permanently.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jennie Ribbons-Steen highlighted the seriousness of Jones’ offences, noting that his crimes spanned multiple years and that he posed a continuing threat to society.
She expressed hope that the sentence would aid in providing some level of justice and healing for the victim, reaffirming that time is no barrier to pursuing justice.
Furthermore, Detective Inspector Chris Hargrave of the North Wales Amethyst Team reiterated the police commitment to bringing sexual offenders to justice.
He encouraged victims of sexual crimes to come forward and assured that specially trained officers are available to support victims through every step of the investigation.
The team works closely with the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) to provide confidential medical, emotional, and practical support with the help of dedicated healthcare professionals.
North Wales Police continue to emphasize the importance of reporting sexual offences, offering assistance and guidance to all victims.
