DAVID EDGERTON FROM CONNAH'S QUAY SENTENCED FOR SERIAL SEX OFFENSES NEAR MOLD AND CHESTER
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Flintshire community, David Edgerton, a resident of Connah's Quay, has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses. The court heard that Edgerton, 22 years old at the time, committed a series of heinous acts that spanned several locations, including Leeswood near Mold, Chester, and Warrington, Cheshire. The most grievous of his crimes involved the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl in Leeswood last August. Edgerton admitted to these charges, which also included assault with intent to commit a sex offence involving a 10-year-old girl in Chester in 2011. Despite his admissions, he denied other allegations, including the rape of a woman in her 40s at her flat in Warrington last August, as well as the attempted rape of a 20-year-old woman after breaking into her home in Connah's Quay in 2009. Additionally, he contested the attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl but was ultimately found guilty of this charge by Mold Crown Court.
The court proceedings revealed a disturbing incident from February 2013, when a 14-year-old girl was attacked by Edgerton. The girl, who was terrified, attempted to alert her family by sending Facebook messages that read “help” and “raping me.” According to prosecutor John Philpotts, Edgerton had tried to abduct a different girl, a 13-year-old, just hours earlier by asking her to show him the way to a pub. The young girl refused to go with him, but Edgerton persisted and later approached the 14-year-old girl, asking for directions before forcibly dragging her into nearby woods where he committed the assault.
During the attack, Edgerton reportedly held her tightly, grabbed her hair, and threatened her to prevent her from raising the alarm. Despite her ordeal, the girl managed to send messages to her family, which included pleas for help. She could hear her sister and mother shouting her name, but Edgerton managed to escape before they could find her. The court was told that Edgerton’s actions were part of a pattern of predatory behavior, with authorities describing him as a “serious sexual predator.”
Judge Merfyn Hughes addressed Edgerton directly, warning him that the sentence he would later receive would be “a very long one,” reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the threat he posed to the community. The sentencing underscores the severity with which the judicial system treats such offenses, especially those involving vulnerable victims and repeated predatory conduct. The case has left a lasting impact on the residents of Connah's Quay and the surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of vigilance and community safety in the face of such dangerous individuals.
