HOMELESS MAN JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING VULNERABLE WOMAN IN NEWCASTLE
A homeless woman was sexually assaulted by a drunk reveller in the city centre after backing out of an agreement to sleep with him for cash.David Anderson claimed he had struck a deal with the woman when she approached him for money, saying he would give her £80 in return for sex.
He stated she then backed out of the arrangement and he ended up forcing himself on her in a doorway in Newcastle.
The court heard he punched her in the midriff and sexually assaulted her as she screamed for help.
The attack ended when concerned passers-by intervened and Anderson fled.
Now the 41-year-old, who has never been in trouble before, has been jailed for two years and four months after admitting sexual assault at Newcastle Crown Court.
Judge Stephen Earl told him: “You clearly did know she, in fact, at that point, was dissenting and had withdrawn whatever consent she had given you beforehand.
There would be no doubt she was withdrawing her consent by virtue of her screaming and by the fact other people came running, at which point you ran off.” Anderson, of Severus Road, Fenham, Newcastle, was described as a keen runner and athlete who does not normally drink.
His defense stated he is ashamed and embarrassed by his behavior.
He is required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
The court emphasized that the victim was vulnerable, living on the streets, and that Anderson took advantage of her desperation and her initial agreement which he then withdrew from, leading to the assault.
The judge condemned Anderson's actions as a clear criminal offense and noted that he would be devastated by the prison sentence.
