DARREN TOMPKINS SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN COVENTRY AND RYTON
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Coventry and Ryton, Darren Tompkins, aged 32, was handed a lengthy prison sentence of 15 years at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, following his conviction on multiple serious charges related to the sexual abuse of two young children. The court heard that Tompkins, who resided in Ryton, committed these heinous acts over a span of two years, targeting two victims aged just nine and five at the time of the offences.Judge Philip Gregory described Tompkins' actions as a 'gross and deliberate abuse of trust,' emphasizing the severity and malicious intent behind his crimes. The defendant was found guilty of eight counts of rape and two counts of causing or inciting children under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity. During the trial, Tompkins maintained his innocence, denying the charges and claiming that the children were lying, which forced the young victims to testify against him in court.
Following the verdict, the mother of the children, who has chosen to remain anonymous for legal reasons, expressed her feelings of relief mixed with anger and disgust. She stated, “However long he got was not enough. I feel angry and disgusted for what he has done. He deserves everything he gets.” The woman, a mother of four, had met Tompkins several years ago in Rugby, where he initially acted as a 'father figure' to her children. However, her perception of him changed dramatically when her children confided in her last year about the abuse.
It was only after the children disclosed the abuse that the full extent of Tompkins' actions became known. During cross-examination, one of the children revealed that Tompkins had told her he had not yet abused her younger siblings, aged two and four, but planned to do so when they reached the age of five. The court was also informed that Tompkins had made the children engage in sexual acts with each other and had recorded these acts on his mobile phone, further illustrating the predatory and perverted nature of his conduct.
Judge Gregory summarized the case by highlighting Tompkins' 'predatory' sexual tendencies and 'perverted interests,' which made him a 'serious threat' to children. The defense attorney, Simon Worlock, expressed remorse on behalf of Tompkins, stating that his client wished he could undo his actions and that he intended to seek help while serving his sentence. Despite this, Tompkins will be eligible for parole after serving six years and has been placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.
The mother of the victims shared that both she and her children are currently receiving counseling to cope with the trauma. She added, “I blame myself and I will never get over it. It’s a matter of picking up the pieces and getting on with our lives — if we can. But we are all relieved it’s over.” The case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding children from such predatory individuals.
