MAN CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC ABUSE CHARGES, INCLUDING FALSE IMPRISONMENT
Darren O'Neill, aged 28 and residing on Strand Road in Derry, faced charges relating to incidents that allegedly occurred between June 6 and June 10, 2024.He appeared before Derry Magistrates Court charged with multiple offenses, including domestic abuse and false imprisonment.
According to police reports, a woman, who was O'Neill's former partner, approached the station on June 10 to report that she had been assaulted.
She claimed that O'Neill had arrived at her flat intoxicated on June 6 and subjected her to repeated physical assaults, during which he also damaged her phone by throwing it to the ground.
Witnesses, identified as two friends of the woman, reportedly saw the assault.
The court proceedings revealed that after this incident, O'Neill reportedly fell asleep, and the following day, he ordered the two witnesses to leave.
It was alleged he continued to assault the woman after they left.
The woman also stated that on June 7, O'Neill pressured her into sexual activity despite her clear refusal.
Additionally, he was accused of refusing to leave her apartment, verbally abusing her, pulling her by the hair, and throwing objects such as a screwdriver, which narrowly missed her.
He also hit her with a Sky remote and damaged her bathroom door.
Police observed several injuries on the victim consistent with her account.
When questioned, O'Neill gave no comment in response to all inquiries.
However, officers noted injuries to his knuckles aligning with her reports.
It was also disclosed that O'Neill has a criminal record with 37 previous convictions for assault.
He was currently on bail and had been charged with non-fatal strangulation of the same woman.
The police opposed bail, citing the risk of reoffending, while the defense attorney, Jack Quigley, described the case as complex, emphasizing that both parties struggled with alcohol issues.
District Judge Barney McElhom stated he would consider granting bail if O'Neill lacked a relevant criminal record but ultimately denied the application, citing concerns that he posed too high a risk.
