ANDREW COYLE'S VIOLENT ASSAULT IN DERRY DURING CHRISTMAS NIGHT SHOCKINGLY REVEALED

On the night of December 26, 2020, a disturbing act of domestic violence unfolded in the city of Derry, leaving a trail of trauma and concern within the community. The perpetrator, 34-year-old Andrew Coyle, was involved in a brutal attack that targeted his partner at the doorstep of a family residence.

According to detailed witness accounts and official court documents, Coyle's assault was both severe and violent. He repeatedly struck his partner, employing physical force that included hitting and strangulation. The assault escalated to an attempt on her life, as Coyle wielded a kitchen knife in a desperate effort to kill her. In addition to the stabbing injuries inflicted to her neck and body, he also battered her head against a switched-on cooker hob, causing further injuries and trauma.

The victim, despite the assault, managed to break free from Coyle’s grip and sought refuge inside the house. She was found wounded and exposed, having been left naked and with injuries that resembled stab wounds. Her escape was aided by a vigilant neighbor who heard the piercing screams emanating from the scene. The neighbor intervened, pulling her inside the safety of the home, locking the front door to prevent Coyle from re-entering, and immediately dialed emergency services by calling 999. The emergency-call operator remained on the line, providing crucial guidance and safety instructions to the witness until police officers arrived at the scene.

Police responded swiftly, arriving at the residence shortly after the call. They found Andrew Coyle loitering outside the property, and he was promptly arrested and taken into custody. The seriousness of the incident prompted the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland to pursue charges against Coyle. On June 29, 2021, they formally prosecuted him on three counts, reflecting the gravity of his actions.

The charges included attempted grievous bodily harm under the Criminal Attempts and Conspiracy (NI) Order 1983 and Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, criminal damage to clothing under the Criminal Damage (NI) Order 1977, and common assault under Section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

Domestic violence charities have issued warnings that the holiday season often sees a rise in abuse cases, as increased stress and social isolation contribute to heightened risks of violence. They emphasize the importance of seeking help immediately for anyone experiencing or witnessing such incidents, underscoring the need for community vigilance and support during these vulnerable times.
