POLICE OFFICER DARREN MCKIE JAILED FOR WIFE'S MURDER
A former police inspector, Darren McKie, has received a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Leanne McKie, who was a detective constable.Evidence presented in court indicated that McKie strangled his wife inside their home and later dumped her body at Poynton Lake.
Judge Mr Justice Robin Spencer stated that McKie had exploited his familiarity with criminal investigations and betrayed the public’s confidence in his role as a senior police officer through this brutal act.
The jury at Chester Crown Court found McKie guilty of murder, and he was told he must serve at least 19 years before being eligible for parole.
The sentencing remarks revealed that on the day of the killing, McKie left his work suddenly after receiving a text from his wife, who had uncovered his attempt to secretly secure a £54,000 loan.
It was established that he forged her signature and used police resources unlawfully to obtain her payslips needed for the loan.
The court described how McKie transported her body in her car and later returned to conceal the crime by discarding her remains in the lake, acting as if nothing had happened.
The judge emphasized that McKie’s behavior was callous and showed no remorse, effectively depriving their children of their mother and her parents of their only daughter.
