BENJAMIN POOLE SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS IN CHESHIRE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS AT CARE FACILITY
A troubling case of sexual misconduct involving a care worker at a facility in Cheshire has culminated in a prison sentence for Benjamin Poole.The incident, which was captured on covert camera and reported by the victim, has shocked the local community and highlighted serious concerns about trust and accountability within care environments.
Benjamin Poole, aged 21 and a resident of Crewe, appeared before Chester Crown Court on Thursday, 12 August, where he was formally sentenced to six years of imprisonment.
Prior to sentencing, Poole had pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault and two counts of wilfully neglecting an individual, reflecting the gravity of his misconduct while employed at the care centre.
Poole worked as a care worker at a specialized facility in Cheshire, where his role was to look after patients, some of whom were vulnerable due to severe health conditions.
His responsibilities included providing essential care and support to those under his supervision.
However, during the summer of 2020, serious allegations surfaced involving his misconduct towards a female patient in her 20s who was suffering from intense seizures.
The patient, alarmed by unusual sensations and occurrences during her seizures, took proactive steps to safeguard herself.
In November 2020, she purchased an alarm clock equipped with a discreet built-in camera to monitor her condition.
Within days of installing the device, she captured footage of Poole engaging in sexual assault while she was incapacitated due to a seizure.
This courageous act of recording the incident proved pivotal in triggering a police investigation.
Immediately upon discovering the footage, the woman reported the assault to staff members at the facility.
The staff promptly contacted law enforcement authorities, leading to the arrest of Benjamin Poole.
He was subsequently charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of wilfully neglecting an individual.
The charges reflected both the assault and the breach of trust inherent in his role as a caregiver.
Following his conviction and sentencing, Detective Constable Amelia Stevens issued a statement emphasizing the betrayal of trust involved.
She remarked, “As a carer, Poole held a position of trust, tasked with providing care and support during vulnerable moments.
Instead, he exploited that trust for his own sexual gratification, believing himself to be above accountability.” Detective Stevens further praised the victim's bravery, noting, “Thanks to her courage and determination, Poole is now facing severe consequences.
Although she may never fully forget what occurred, her actions have helped bring justice and hopefully will inspire other victims to come forward.” In addition to his prison term, Poole was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which is indefinite, and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance, especially within vulnerable care settings, and underscores the need for rigorous enforcement of safeguarding protocols.
