WARRINGTON RYLANDS FOOTBALL CLUB SACKS MANAGER AFTER IT IS REVEALED HE IS A CONVICTED RAPIST
A football club has dismissed its manager following revelations that he is a convicted rapist.Samuel Wilson's contract was ended after only three days in his role at Warrington Rylands FC, once it came to light that he had been sentenced to five years in prison.
Wilson was found guilty of raping a woman he had never previously met or knew the name of, in a Manchester flat in 2015.
The assault occurred after the woman engaged in consensual sex with Wilson’s friend.
He was also mandated to remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Wilson originally joined the club in 2021 as a player and was appointed as joint interim manager in February, following the departure of then-manager Michael Clegg to Macclesfield.
After leading the Northern Premier League club to the promotion play-offs, he was appointed as the permanent manager on a two-year deal on Saturday, 13 April.
However, just three days later, the club announced his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.
Wilson was convicted of rape at the age of 24.
Details at Manchester Crown Court revealed that when Wilson was 21, he assaulted a woman after she returned with a friend of his to a rented flat in central Manchester following a night out in May 2013.
She had engaged in consensual sex with Wilson’s friend.
Wilson, who had not spoken to the woman prior, entered the room and forced himself upon her, after which she fled and called the police immediately.
In September 2015, Wilson was sentenced to five years in prison.
The court also ordered him to stay on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.
Detective Constable Sophie Swift, from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Sexual Offences Unit, praised the victim’s bravery in giving evidence.
She stated, “Wilson walked into that room and saw his friend having consensual sex with the woman.
Without her consent, he then took advantage of the situation and raped her.
I would like to applaud the bravery of the woman, who courageously relived her ordeal by giving evidence in court, which in itself can be very upsetting, and facing down her attacker.
The jury did not believe Wilson’s assertion the sex was consensual and found him guilty of rape.
He will now serve five years in prison, which I hope sends out a message to others that if you do take advantage of a woman without her consent it is rape, and the police, Crown Prosecution Service and the courts will prosecute you.”
